How to Make a Wooden Office Chair Mat

Making your own wooden chair mat is a simple and inexpensive way to add a practical element to any home office. A wooden mat will create texture and elegance, while adding functionality to your work space. It will also protect your carpet or floors from damage from a rolling chair. A wooden mat is more durable, so it won't need replacing as often as a plastic mat.

Things You'll Need

  • Measuring tape
  • Plastic mat
  • 8-inch wood interlocking laminate flooring
  • Glue for wood
  • Rubber mallet
  • Router and router bit
  • Clamps
  • Construction adhesive

Instructions

    • 1

Lay out the wood-laminate flooring in the area the mat will be before you begin assembling the squares.

    • 2

Add a drop of glue to the lip of the wood square board. Lock the square board with another square board. Make sure the boards are interlocked together before adding additional wood boards. Use the rubber mallet if necessary to tap the squares in place.

    • 3

Place a clamp on the two boards for three minutes to make sure the boards stick together flat.

    • 4

Repeat step 2 and 3 until all boards are locked together.

    • 5

Turn the mat upside down. Using the router, remove any of the interlocking edges that are visible.

    • 6

Measure the width and length of the wooden mat. Cut the plastic mat to fit the measurements of the wooden mat.

    • 7

Add construction adhesive to the underside of the wooden mat. Line the wooden mat up with the plastic mat and attach together. Make sure the "fingers" side of the plastic mat is facing up. Add a weight to the newly assembled mat until the glue dries.
