The Size of Flat File Cabinets

Flat files are useful organizational and storage units for home, studio and office. They are used by artists, galleries, architects, planning offices, contractors and other industries using large paper or flat materials. The dimensions of flat files vary according to the standard materials typically used in a particular industry or activity and are made in a wide variety of sizes. Flat files are made from hardwood, laminates or steel and feature large, oversized and shallow drawers.
  1. Width and Depth

    • Commonly available sizes for flat file drawers are 20-by-26 inches, 24-by-30 inches, 24-by-36 inches, 30-by-42 inches, 32-by-40 inches and 36-by-48 inches. This is stated in terms of the size of paper that can be accommodated rather than the actual size of the drawer and the finished cabinet size. You can expect the drawer to be slightly larger for ease of removing and storing projects. Manufacturers will state the finished size in the specifications for more accurate measurements. Expect your cabinet size to be approximately 4 inches larger than drawer size in width and depth. The height of your cabinet is dependent on the number of drawers and whether you are stacking more than one flat file.

    Drawer Height

    • Drawer height is an important factor and having both shallow and deep draws is useful. Shallow drawers are helpful for works in progress and work that may have wet surfaces or dimensional components that cannot be stacked. Archival and museum standards also require drawers to accommodate a single piece of art. Deeper drawers can accommodate stacks of paper, flat board products, graphics and other supplies that cannot be stored vertically. A typical flat file drawer will be between ¾ and 2 inches high. Stacking flat file drawers is a good way to have a variety of drawer heights.

    Accessories and Options

    • If you have a variety of sizes that need flat file storage, use flat file dividers. Dividers are long plastic sections that can be cut to whatever size you need. They are sticky on the bottom and can easily be adhered to the bottom of the drawer. Flat file cabinets can be ordered with wheels, flush bases or setback bases. Locks are not standard on all flat files and can be ordered separately for some brands. Flat files can be purchased with any number of drawers and stacked to customize your studio or office needs.

    Archival and Museum Flat Files

    • If security and archival features are required, buy only those flat files that are designated and specified with those features. Museum and archival files are built with products that will not damage important and valuable documents and artwork. Many paints and greases used in moving parts will give off a gas, causing damage to artwork and paper. Archival files are not made of wood and have enclosed bearings or nylon bearings. Choose cabinets with locks and a high base to raise the cabinet from the floor to avoid potential water damage or spills.
