How to Install Keyed Lock Bars on a Drawer

Locking bars help secure the contents in drawers and filing cabinets. Many vertical and horizontal filing cabinets come without a pre-installed lock. This creates a problem for those who require a locking drawer. A locking bar resolves this issue by fitting along the outside edge of filing cabinet with recessed drawers. This security bar locks with a padlock and contains hinges to swing out of the way when the drawer is in use. Installing a locking bar on drawers and filing cabinets is a simple process that only requires everyday household tools.

Instructions

Measure the length of the drawer or filing cabinet that needs a lock. Place the tape measure at the top of the drawer and mark the measurement at the bottom of the drawer. Record the measurement of the single drawer. If a whole filing cabinet requires locking, measure all the drawers on the filing cabinet together.

Select the correct size of locking bar for the drawer or filing cabinet. Note that standard size locking bars come in a range of sizes; a single drawer locking bar fits up to 11 inches in length. Read the instructions of the locking bar kit. Decide if you want the locking bar on the left side or right side of the drawer or filing cabinet.

Attach the knob into the slot on the inner portion of the locking bar with a screw. Face the oval stop on the knob in an upward direction if installing the locking bar on the left-hand side of the cabinet. Make sure the knob is securely fastened. Measure the spot for the top hinge hole 5-1/8-inch from the top of the drawer and 1/4 inch from the outside of the drawer. Mark the spot with the pencil. Use a 3/32-inch drill bit to drill the hole in the drawer.

Use a screw to attach the locking bar to the drawer at the top. Test the locking bar’s placement with a level to ensure it is straight. Mark the bottom hinge hole with the pencil. Move the locking bar to the side. Drill the bottom hinge hole. Slide the locking bar back into position and secure with a screw. Drill all remaining screw holes on the hinges, using the hinges for a guide. Install the rest of the screws adhere the locking bar to the drawer.

Flip the locking bar over the drawer and slide it into place. Insert the padlock into the slot and lock. Check whether the drawer will open; if the drawer opens consider using a bigger padlock. Unlock and remove the padlock. Lift up on the handle on the front of the locking bar. Swing the bar to the side to access the drawer. The bar has a spring in the middle so the locking bar stays open. Close the locking bar and push the handle down to reveal the padlock hole. Replace the padlock and turn the key to lock the drawer.
