How to Build a Sewing Room Wall Cabinet

The biggest requirement of sewing room storage is the ability to store entire bolts of fabric at one time by stacking them. Secondary requirements include space for stacks of miscellaneous fabrics as well as shelving that can accommodate smaller storage containers. Two hinged doors make access to the various sections of the cabinet convenient, and the depth of the cabinet allows for storage of the sewing machine as well as the sewing equipment and materials.

Instructions

    • 1

Stand four 1/2-by-18-by-48 inch boards up on their long, thin edges and arrange them into a square with the help of an assistant. Set one end of each board into the side of another board until the entire frame is in a 48 1/2-inch square. Drill four evenly spaced holes into the side of each board and into the end of the board that butts up to it, for a total of 16 holes. Join the boards together with 2-inch screws drilled through each of these holes.

    • 2

Set a 1/2-by-48 1/2-by-48 1/2 inch board -- which will be the rear board -- onto the square frame and arrange it so the sides of the rear board are even with the other sides. Drill a hole every 12 inches around the outside of the rear board and into the side boards. Set a 2-inch wood screw in each hole and tighten the screws to firmly set the boards together.

Flip the cabinet over so the open side is facing upward. Position two, 1/2-by-24 1/4-by-48 1/2 inch boards on top of the open side. Open the two boards as if they were installed doors and position two hinges between each door board and the cabinet. Mark the locations of all the hinge screw holes. Predrill holes into each marking and attach the hinges to the doors and cabinet using 1/2-inch wood screws.

Attach knobs to each door by positioning the knobs in the desired places, marking the spot and drilling through the door. Attach the knob through the hole using the included bolt that came with the knob, or by using a wood screw.
