Decide on a size and dimensions for your buffet hutch. Take into account the size of the room and your storage needs. Hutches can consist of drawers, shelves, cabinets and dividers, so consider all storage options or look at existing hutches for ideas. Typically hutches are between 4 and 6 feet tall. Hutches can also be tall and narrow to fit certain spaces in a room. The depth of the hutch is another important consideration, as more depth will mean more storage space but also take up more space in the room. Consider a hutch with a triangular footprint to fit into a corner.
Select lumber for your hutch and begin construction. Since a buffet hutch is likely to hold a great deal of weight, use strong joining methods. Dovetailing corners or double reinforcing with both wood glue and nails can give the hutch added strength. For the backing of the hutch, use a lightweight wood paneling to reduce weight and give the back of the shelves and drawers a finished look.
Allow all of the glued joints to dry before beginning the finishing process. This will depend on the type of wood used but should involve smoothing of all edges and seams with a file, followed by coarse, then fine-grit sandpaper. Stain and varnish the surfaces and insert any shelves or drawers. Also, apply any hardware such as drawer pulls, hinges or shelf brackets. To maintain your hutch clean it with oil soap occasionally.
