How to Fix Dining Room Chair Casters

Dining room chairs that stick, rock or tilt can be a nuisance, especially when guests sit in the chairs. The casters on rolling dining room chairs can become dirty or damaged with frequent use. A few simple procedures can help resolve the problematic areas and create a more comfortable dining room seating arrangement. Dining room chair casters often have to be replaced if the plastic has cracked, but a caster still in working condition can be fixed.

  • Scissors
  • Pipe cleaner
  • Greasing oil or WD-40

Instructions

    • 1

Look in the owner's manual for assembly instructions for the dining room chair. Determine whether the assembly instructions show permanently attached or removable chair casters. If the casters are permanently attached, go to step 5. If the casters are not permanently attached, turn the chair on its side with the casters facing outward.

    • 2

Remove the casters from the bottom of the chair by unscrewing the small bolts with a screwdriver. Examine each caster to see if any debris is blocking the roller from sliding correctly. If a caster is tangled with fuzz, carpet fibers or hair, carefully cut away the material with a sharp pointy pair of scissors.

    • 3

Once all fuzz and hair have been removed, use a pipe cleaner to loosen any small items that are limiting the motion of the casters. If a small rock, toy or a piece of food is jammed in any of the chair casters, slide the piper cleaner behind the troubled area. Floss the pipe cleaner back and forth to dislodge the item from its position. Hold both ends of the pipe cleaner, and twist it forward and backward until the debris is loosened.

    • 4

Reattach the dining room chair casters using a screwdriver. Apply lubricant to the casters' moving parts. Add a few drops of greasing oil or a small spritz of WD-40 to the mechanism that controls the movement of the casters. Rotate each caster in a clockwise motion to make sure the oil has penetrated and lubricated the entire area. Dry the saturated casters with a towel.

    • 5

Clean all dirty and oil soaked casters. Soak a soft cloth in a solution of warm water and a mild dish detergent, and gently wipe the entire surface area of each caster. Rotate the wheels of the casters against the soft cloth to remove any dirt and grime lodged in the mechanism. A cotton swab can be used to clean the small areas that are difficult to reach with the cloth. Dry the exterior of the casters by rubbing them with a clean cloth.
