How to Make a Tabletop from Hardwood Flooring

Making your own wooden table top sounds like a daunting task until you consider building it from strips of pre-cut wood. This kind of table is similar in style to a butcher block table. One of the easiest ways to create this effect is to use strips of hardwood flooring. Solid hardwood can fit together to create a custom table that will perfectly complement your décor. Use leftover pieces of wood from your own flooring installation or find some reclaimed flooring to create a rustic, one-of-a-kind piece.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay out all of your floor boards across the end of a work table. Measure one strip of the wood and mark it where it needs to be cut. Lay the carpenters square across the mark, and draw a mark on all the other pieces as well.

    • 2

Trim the boards to the correct length, using a circular saw. Cut the boards straight across.

    • 3

Sand all edges of each board with a medium-grit sanding block to eliminate splinters and rough edges. A smooth, sanded edge will fit together tighter than a rough, uneven edge. Wipe away the sanding dust with a damp rag.

    • 4

Squirt glue between each piece of wood and press them together tightly. Clamp the boards together with woodworking clamps to keep them tightly joined until the glue dries. Wipe away any excess glue that seeps from the joined boards with a rag.

Let the glue dry for 48 hours. Remove the clamps. Add any stain or finish coat that you like.
