How to Reupholster a Dining Room Chair With Jute Webbing

Installing the Webbing

  Remove the existing cushion to expose the frame of the chair. Turn the chair upside down on your work surface.

  Position the jute webbing over one corner of the underside of the chair's frame. Staple it in place. Space the staples approximately 1 inch apart and use as many staples as you deem necessary for the desired strength of the chair.

  Pull the length of webbing to the opposite side of the chair frame. Stretch the webbing taut, then staple it in to the frame. Leave approximately 1 inch of excess webbing. Fold this material over. Add another row of staples to hold it in place. Cut away any excess material.

  Staple additional lengths of webbing to the chair's frame in the same manner. Leave a space of approximately 2 inches between the webbing strips.

  Staple strips of webbing in the opposite direction across the chair's frame. Pull these strips through the first pieces, weaving them over and under to create a grid. Space the strips approximately 2 inches apart. Secure their ends as you did in Step 3.

Reupholstering

  Turn the chair right side up. Measure the seat cushion area. Cut a piece of foam to this size and position it over the webbing you installed. Apply spray adhesive to the exterior of the foam and spread a layer of cotton batting over it for extra comfort. Staple this batting directly to the chair's frame.

  Create a pattern for your dining room chair covering by draping a piece of muslin over the seat and tracing out the required shape. Cut the shape out of the muslin and place it over your new upholstery fabric. Trace around your pattern and cut out your piece.

  Lay your upholstery fabric flat. Turn your chair upside down and position it over the fabric. Pull the fabric taut over the underside of the chair. Staple the material directly to the chair's frame. Cut away any excess material.
