How to Paint a China Hutch to Look Old

Antique furniture adds appeal to your decor, but it probably won't do much for your budget. Get the charm of an antique china hutch less expensively with the help of a little paint, some antiquing techniques and much less time than it takes an item to become a real antique.

Things You'll Need

  • Medium grit sandpaper
  • Tack cloth or soft rag
  • Dark acrylic paint (often called latex paint at hardware stores)
  • Paint brush
  • Masking tape
  • Crackle medium

Instructions

    • 1

Sand the hutch lightly to prepare the wood for painting.

    • 2

Remove sawdust with a tack cloth or a soft rag.

    • 3

Paint the hutch with dark paint, using two coats if necessary. Allow to dry thoroughly.

    • 4

Paint a small area of the hutch with crackle medium after taping off the edges of the area you are painting. Allow it to dry according to the manufacturer's directions.

    • 5

Apply the light paint over the crackle medium. Allow it to dry.

    • 6

Tape off another area and apply crackle medium. Paint the light color over the dry crackle medium. Continue until the entire surface is painted and dried.

    • 7

Distress the finish more by randomly sanding areas of the hutch and removing one or more layers of paint.
