Remove any glass from the hutch, if you can. If you cannot remove the glass, tape the edges of the glass where it meets the wood. Try to slide the painter's tape under the wood so the glass is protected but no wood is covered.
Put on the cotton gloves. Sand the entire hutch, using the cotton gloves to feel for areas that are still rough. Continue sanding until all surfaces are smooth. Vacuum the dust from the hutch and the floor around you. Remove the gloves. Rub down the hutch with a tack cloth to remove any remaining dust or debris.
Lay out a drop cloth to protect your floors. Apply a coat of wood sealant to the entire hutch, using a paintbrush. Allow it to dry thoroughly before moving to the next step.
Apply primer if you want to obscure the wood grain. If you prefer to have some of the wood show through, skip the primer and proceed directly to applying the paint. Allow the primer or paint to dry between coats, ending with the coat of paint that gives you the look you want.
