Choose a fabric.The fabric should be durable, stain resistant and easy to clean. Consider using upholstery fabric rather than general-use fabric. Decorating magazine recommends indoor/outdoor fabrics for use on dining chairs because it resists fading and comes in a wide variety of colors and patterns.
Turn the dining room chair upside down, and use a Phillips head screwdriver to remove the seat from the chair.
Remove the staples that hold the fabric to the chair seat with a flat head screwdriver or a pair of wire cutters. Take the original fabric off the chair seat.
Use the old fabric as a pattern, and cut your new fabric to the same size.
Place the new fabric face down on a flat surface, and then center the chair seat on top of it.
Fold the fabric onto the seat and, starting in the center, staple it in place with the staple gun. Make sure to hold the fabric taunt as you staple.
Place the covered seat back onto the dining chair, and use the screws to reattach it.
