Ask neighbors, relatives, friends and other acquaintances if they had any cabinets in their home refaced. Note the type of cabinet they had and what room it was in. Don't assume all cabinets are in kitchens. Ask them about their experience with the person or company they hired and if they would recommend them.
Scroll through your local phone book. Contact the companies that you have already heard about and several others that are listed. The phone book advertisements may note years of experience, craftsmanship awards, length of time the company has been in business and other noteworthy claims. Take note if the person or company specializes in just cabinets, or if they appear to be a jack of all trades. Check company websites as well.
Contact the professionals and make appointments to visit their shop to see some of the work they've done, or invite them to your home to provide a free estimate. If they are unwilling to meet with you for either type of appointment, they don't deserve your business. It is also worth visiting large hardware retailers or home-improvement centers to inquire about their products and services.
Select a professional based on credentials, workmanship, price and guarantees on products and services. If you have several estimates, you may be able to bargain with some of the companies to reduce their price.
