DIY: Liquor & Bar Cabinet Conversion

Finding a free-standing bar in a furniture or department store is much more difficult than it used to be, as people choose to enjoy their libations in public pubs or restaurants more than previous generations. When you do find a bar, there is a chance it may not be the correct size for your space or the appearance may not appeal to you. However, like many homeowners, you may have an old television armoire in storage that you like but which will no longer hold your television. You can convert that armoire into the perfect free-standing bar for a sophisticated piece.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove all of the items from the armoire. Wipe down the piece well with a rag to remove dust and dirt. Paint or refinish the outside of the piece as you wish, and let it dry thoroughly.

    • 2

Sand the bottom of the television area if your piece is made of slick material or is coated with sealer. Apply tiles to this area with thinset mortar. Let the mortar dry overnight, and grout the tiles.

    • 3

Line the back of the television space for aesthetic appeal and to cover any wiring holes; also line the media storage spaces, if you wish. Cover the surfaces with mirrored tiles, coated wallpaper or whatever suits your tastes. Make sure that whatever you use is moisture-resistant in case of spills.

Install a metal wine glass rack to the top of the space. Slide your stemmed glasses onto the rack, and place the liquor bottles on the tiled shelf beneath them. Keep other bar glasses and accessories in the media storage spaces.
