The Advantages & Disadvantages of a Hardwood Table

Hardwood has a timeless quality that is difficult to replicate. The good news is, you don't need a particular style of dining room to accommodate a hardwood table. The design and finish of your table will determine whether it fits best in a traditional, modern, country, Asian-inspired, or other style of room. Still, nothing is perfect. There are both advantages and disadvantages to owning a hardwood dining table.
  1. Advantage: Tradition

    • Because hardwood tables have such a long and distinctive history, they immediately anchor a home with a touch of the traditional. Even if the table is thoroughly modern in style, it is a traditional touch to have such a solid piece of furniture in the dining area.

    Advantage: Durability

    • A hardwood table is sturdy, and with proper care, can last for decades. In fact, a hardwood table can be an heirloom piece, something that is passed down from generation to generation. Investing in a quality hardwood table makes good financial sense.

    Advantage: Changeability

    • The color of hardwood is not fixed. For example, if a table is a light shade of maple during a time when dark oak is in vogue, it can be stripped and refinished to better reflect the style of the day. This is not an option when you have a table made of another material.

    Disadvantage: Upkeep

    • Hardwood is not impervious to damage. It can be burned, deeply scratched, worn or stained. Proper upkeep is a factor when you own a hardwood table.

    Disadvantage: Flexibility

    • Once you've made the financial investment into a solid hardwood table, you may not feel as though you have the flexibility to replace it when you tire of it.

    Disadvantage: Weight

    • Hardwood is heavy. Not only is this a consideration when you're moving the table, but also may be of concern if you have a toddler who could pull a heavy chair down on himself.
