Instructions

    • 1

Lay the four balusters on a flat surface running horizontally from side to side. Measure up 15 inches from the base of each baluster and drill a hole 1 1/2 inches through each baluster.

    • 2

Flip each baluster down one time. Each drilled hole should now be along the edge closest to you. Measure up 15 inches from the base of each baluster and drill a hole 1 1/2 inches through each baluster. The two drilled holes will intersect in the center.

    • 3

Drill a hole through the center of each end of each 1x2 section. Drill 1 1/2 inches into each end and screw one threaded rod into each end. Place 12-inch 1x2 sections between two balusters and twist to tighter into the balusters. This will create a box structure with a baluster at each corner.

    • 4

Drill a hole through the top center of each baluster. Run a straight edge from the top left corner of each baluster to the bottom right corner and draw a line. Place the straight edge from the top right corner to the bottom left corner and draw a line this way as well. Drill through the intersecting point 2 1/4 inches.

    • 5

Fill the hole on top of each baluster with wood glue and push one straight wood rod into each hole. Allow the wood glue to dry while you continue working on the project.

    • 6

Place the 18x18-inch section of plywood on a flat surface. Measure over 3 inches from each corner along each edge of the square. Draw a line from the left side 3-inch marks to the right side 3-inch marks as guided by the straight edge. Draw a line from the top edge 3-inch marks to the 3-inch marks along the bottom as guided by the straight edge. This will create a 3-inch square at each corner.

    • 7

Mark the center location on each 3-inch corner square. Run a straight edge from the top left corner of each square to the bottom right corner and draw a line. Place the straight edge from the top right corner to the bottom left corner and draw a line this way as well. Drill a hole 3/4 inch through each center mark.

    • 8

Fill each 3/4 inch deep hole with wood glue and press 18-by-18 inch plywood section onto the wood rods in the balusters. Allow the wood glue to dry completely before using.
