How to Fix a Crack in a Table

Wooden tables not protected well with regular oil treatments and light dusting can become susceptible to cracking. Once a table develops a crack, you will notice imperfections in the surface. Unless the table is an antique, you can make most repairs yourself. Small cracks are easier to fix but some larger ones are also repairable. These simple carpentry fixes are inexpensive and easy to do on furniture.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove old glue from the table. Simply rub the area with a vinegar-dampened cloth. Rub until all the old repair glue is gone. Allow the area to dry completely before continuing — about 30 minutes to an hour.

    • 2

Scoop up a small amount of wood filler with a cuticle orange stick. Use a plastic spatula, if filling a larger crack. Poke the filler into the crack and smooth it across the surface of the crack.

    • 3

Wipe away excess filler with a cloth. Allow the wood filler to cure for two to three hours or according to the package directions.

    • 4

Sand the surface of the table using fine 150-grade sandpaper. Rub away excess glue to leave a smooth finish.

    • 5

Finish the treatment with an oil- or wax-based product. Rub the entire surface of the table with a soft cheesecloth for optimum shine.
