Set a large vase full of fresh flowers in the center of the credenza. Add two buffet lamps on either side of the vase to provide additional light for the room and to draw attention to the flowers. Note: If you are allergic to fresh flowers, use a potted plant or fake flowers instead.
Line up three or four decorative dishes to be displayed on the sideboard. These dishes can be chosen because of their beautiful pattern or because they represent a certain period in history. Use a plain plate holder or a decorative plate rack to hold the dishes.
Display a small collection of pottery or a few ancient artifacts on top of the credenza. These items can easily become conversation pieces during dinner. Just remember to put out no more than four or five items to keep the credenza from becoming crowded and busy looking.
Change the decorations to represent an upcoming holiday. For example, a tabletop Christmas tree can be placed in the center of the sideboard with red and green candlesticks on either side of the tree at Christmas time. At Easter, the decorations can be switched to a large Easter basket filled with dyed eggs in the center. Stuffed bunny rabbits can be set to the left and right of the Easter Basket.
