How to Make a Desktop from Sanded Plywood

You can use plywood to build virtually any piece of furniture. The key is masking the plywood look after the job is done. For this, you’ll need to cover the wood with either paint or an iron-on plastic covering known as veneer. This will leave you with a good-looking surface that is much cheaper than a store-bought alternative.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

  1. Veneer Top

    • 1

Wipe the top and the sides of the desk clean with a tack cloth to remove any dust from sanding.

    • 2

Measure the top and sides of the desk. Transfer the measurements to the back of the iron-on veneer and cut out the pieces with a utility knife.

    • 3

Position the side pieces on the desk and iron them into place. Cut away any veneer that hangs over the top or bottom edges, using the utility knife.

    • 4

Position the top piece and iron it onto the plywood. Cut away any overhanging veneer with the utility knife.

    Paint Top

    • 5

Wipe the top and sides of the desk clean with a tack cloth to remove any dust from sanding.

    • 6

Apply primer to the top and sides of the desk with a paint sponge or roller. Let the primer dry completely before applying your paint.

    • 7

Cover the desk with two layers of paint. High gloss paint is ideal for a smooth plywood surface and will seal the wood. If you prefer less shine, use a semigloss or flat paint, but follow up with two coats of varnish to seal the wood.
