How to Make a Desk Taller

While desks come in many shapes and sizes, some people run into problems working at a desk due to their own height. A tall person working at a short desk, for instance, can lead to constant slouching, poor posture and back problems -- and people with long legs may feel cramped. For those that work at a desk for several hours a day, this can make a job very difficult. Fortunately, there are simple and inexpensive ways to make a desk taller.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose which devices you wish to use to raise the height of your desk. Furniture risers are relatively cheap, easy to find and can support a lot of weight and a variety of furniture leg types. For desks that are equipped with wheels or swivel casters, you should purchase furniture risers specifically designed to lock the foot in place and keep it from rolling. An even simpler solution -- although less aesthetically pleasing -- would be to purchase wood blocks or use old magazines and books.

    • 2

Remove all items from the desk before trying to raise it. Leaving things on the desk top while trying to make it taller can lead to injury or damaged possessions.

    • 3

Ask two friends or family members to lift the desk evenly and place your risers, magazines or books under each leg. If you do not have help, slowly and carefully place each riser one at a time.

Check to ensure that all four legs are at the same height after you have placed your risers, especially if you use books or magazines. Test the stability of the desk by gently shaking, pushing or pulling it from side to side.
