How to Make a Carrel Desk

Carrel desks are popular at universities, libraries and other public studying and research facilities. Often, carrel desks are combined in series, using a shared wall to divide studious occupants from disturbing one another. This type of furniture is ideal for maximizing available space for people to work and study in public while also offering a degree of privacy and solitude to work efficiently. Other than the intended use, all styles of carrels share a spartan design and aesthetic. A common styled carrel can be built with three slabs of plywood, one for the desk and two for legs.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the space where the final desk will reside. Be as precise as possible. For instance, measure the length and width of a space in your study you want to put the carrel and use this as the dimensions for your carrel desk. Allow three to five inches of space between the intended space and any other furniture to avoid damage while moving furniture.

    • 2

Measure the plywood for the desk portion of the carrel. For example, if the dimensions of the space determined in Step 1 is 2 by 3 feet wide, mark these measurements on the plywood and then use the rotating saw to cut.

    • 3

Measure and cut two identical slabs of plywood for the legs of the carrel. Use the width of the desk portion as the width of each leg. Make the height of each leg 4 feet in length. For example, if the desk portion is 3 feet wide then each leg is 4 by 3 feet.

    • 4

Measure from the base of the carrel desk leg to a height of 2 feet. Mark the height with the pencil and then draw a horizontal line across the width of the leg. Repeat with the second carrel desk leg.

    • 5

Mark an "X" on the horizontal line every 8 inches of width. For example, if the width is 3 feet, then make four "X" marks.

    • 6

Match the drill bit to your #8 screws, then attach the bit to the drill. Use the drill to make a hole in the center of each "X" along both carrel desk legs.

    • 7

Drill a line of holes into both 1/2 inch edges of the desk portion of the carrel. Make each hole 8 inches apart to match the holes made in the carrel legs. Blow out any saw dust remaining in the holes.

    • 8

Place the plane of the first carrel leg against the edge of the desk portion and line up the drill holes. Attach the leg to the desk using the screws. Repeat with the other side of the desk and the second carrel leg.

    • 9

Pick a color of wood stain to match the other furniture or decor in your study room. Use a paint brush to apply the stain to the plywood as directed on the product label.
