Refurbishing a Veneer Desk

The home office is one of the more neglected rooms when it comes to renovating. Desks are expensive, especially those made out of solid wood. Let not your heart be troubled, because you can turn your bland office into a posh place. With a few simple renovations, you can refurbish that free desk sitting at the curb or your local thrift shop so it looks brand new. Just be sure and get a chair to match.

Instructions

    • 1

Unscrew the handles and pull out the drawers from the desk.

    • 2

Sand down the drawers, drawer casings, and the top and sides of the desk with 120 grit sandpaper. The purpose is to get a rough surface for the primer paint and remove as much of the veneer as possible. If the desk has imperfections or holes in the veneer, use a 90 grit sandpaper first to even out the top surface.

    • 3

Wipe down everything with a tack cloth. This will remove any dust so that you have the best possible surface to paint.

    • 4

Paint the desk drawers sides and casing with primer. If you are going to paint the top of the desk, cover it with primer as well. If you are going to veneer the top, then it will not need any primer. Let the primer dry for the manufacturer’s recommended time before continuing.

    • 5

Cover all the surfaces in two coats of egg shell paint. Let the paint dry before continuing.

    • 6

      Install the new drawer handles.

    • 7

Attach the veneer to the top of the desk. Otherwise, if you painted it, cover the top of the desk with two coats of varnish. This will protect the paint from the constant wear of things such as the computer mouse.
