How to Make a Lounge Ottoman

A lounge ottoman is versatile. You can use it as a footrest, a seat or a surface for dinner trays for a night of vegging out in front of the television. These pieces tend to be pricey, as with most interesting furniture, so you can save money by making your own. Building a lounge ottoman also allows you to experiment with materials you'd otherwise probably not use, making it an environmentally friendly craft and home decor project.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn a heavy duty wine crate upside down. Choose one of any size that meets your needs. These heavy duty wooden crates look rustic, and when turned into furniture they add creative style to your home environment.

    • 2

Squeeze a 1-inch-thick line of industrial strength fabric glue, starting from one corner of the crate, diagonally across its surface. Repeat, starting from one of the remaining bare corners, to create an "X" shape with the glue.

    • 3

Stuff approximately 3 lbs. of loose cotton stuffing into a standard pillowcase. Fold the opened end over the side of the stuffed pillowcase. Place the pillowcase, with the opened end folded beneath it, onto the glued surface of the crate. Press down firmly for two minutes.

    • 4

Upholster the cushioned surface of the crate. Measure a rectangle of upholstery fabric 4 square inches larger than the top area of the crate. Cut it out. Fold and tuck the edges of the fabric around the the top edges of the crate. Pinch these folded edges against the corner edges as firmly as possible. With your free hand, use an upholstery stapler to secure the fabric to the top of the crate.
