How to Create a Fluted Edge On a Desk

Creating a fluted edge on a desk is as simple as applying a piece of trim. Trim -- a decorative ornamentation influenced by classical architecture -- can enhance almost any piece of furniture. The simplest trim is molding, which is a linear piece of wood found at a home center, lumber yard or builder's supply store. It is easily attached and, when painted or stained to match the desk, appears to be original to the piece.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose the style of fluted molding you like from a home center, lumber yard or builder's supply store. The molding should be as wide or wider than the edge of the desk top so it can be easily attached. A width of 2 inches is good for fluted edging. The length should be adequate to cover the front edge of the desk top.

    • 2

Cut the molding to fit the front of your desk top using a saw, if the retail outlet does not offer this service. Molding can also be applied to the sides and back of the desk top to make the fluting go around the entire desk top. If you are applying molding to the back and sides of the desk, cut the pieces to fit each dimension. Use a miter saw to miter the corners so they fit snugly together.

    • 3

Attach the molding to the desk top with wood glue and 1 1/2-inch finishing nails. Countersink all nails with a finish-nail set. Fill the holes with wood putty and allow it to harden overnight.

    • 4

Sand the molding lightly to even out the surface once the putty has dried and the glue has set. Remove the grit and dust with a tack cloth. After the trim is free of any surface debris, paint or stain it to match the desk.
