DIY: Wire Shelving Workspace Desks

Wire shelving comes in different sizes, which gives you a custom-built look when adding storage to a closet or pantry. When properly installed, wire shelving can also serve as a workspace desk in a home office, bedroom or craft room. Even if you cannot find shelving that exactly fits the space, bolt cutters break off the wire ends, turning the pieces into the size needed. When making a wire shelf desk, use as many shelves as you need for storage or stick with a single shelf as a worktable.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the size of your workspace desk. Decide how long you want the desk and the number of shelves needed underneath the desk. The bottom shelves provide the storage you would typically have in an ordinary desk. Mark the location of each shelf on the wall.

    • 2

Drill a hole along the top line, which is the top of your desk and the longest wire shelf. Drill a ¼-inch hole, move 2 inches over and drill a second hole. Drill ¼-inch holes every 2 inches across the top mark. Repeat this step for each shelf.

    • 3

Place a wire shelf clip flat against one of your holes and slip a 1-inch screw through the hole in the clip and into the wall. Tighten the screw until the screw cannot move any further. Attach a screw to each of the holes you made for each shelf.

    • 4

Line the longest wire shelf across the top series of wire shelf clips. Lean the shelf against the clip and apply enough pressure that the shelf slips into the clip. Attach the longest shelf to each clip, then repeat with your smaller shelves.

    • 5

Set one shelf support brace underneath your top shelf. The shelf should have an L-shape or triangular shape. When properly aligned, one side sits flush with the bottom of the shelf and one sits flush with the wall. Attach the brace to the wall with wood screws through each hole in the brace. Add at least two support braces to the top shelf and any other shelf that will hold a lot of weight.

Mark the location where any shelf touches one of the side or end walls. Move the shelf away from the wall and set an end mounting bracket against the mark. Attach the bracket to the wall with wood screws. Push the wire shelf against the bracket until it slips into the bracket opening. Attach one end mounting bracket to each end of the shelf where it touches an end wall.
