How to Paint Used Office Desks

Old office desks -- no matter how shabby -- can look chic and new with a fresh coat of paint. Because most desks are fairly large, spray painting is an easy option, but not a very economical one. Unless you get an incredible deal on the perfect color of spray paint, opt to paint your old office desk the old-fashioned way. You'll get consistent, praise-worthy results.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay down a large tarp in an open, outdoor space with lots of breezy, fresh air.

    • 2

Take out all of the drawers, if there are any. You must paint all the parts of the desk separately.

    • 3

Unscrew the hardware from the desk using a screwdriver. Place the items in a safe place.

    • 4

Wash down the desk with a little soapy water and a sponge. Make sure you wash away all of the soap and allow the desk to dry completely before painting it.

    • 5

Open your paint can with a screwdriver and stir it for about three minutes with a paint stick.

    • 6

Dip a wide paintbrush into the paint and paint with the grain along the wide surfaces of the desk. Allow the paint to dry for about 24 to 48 hours, depending on the instructions on the paint can. Apply a second coat, making sure to paint with the grain.

Screw the hardware back onto the desk drawers once the desk has dried completely.
