How to Cover a Scratched Computer Desk

It's frustrating to use a scratched computer desk. Small scratches are ugly and hard to clean, and big scratches are both, and make it hard for you to move your keyboard and mouse. A computer desk made from wood veneer or laminate is not something that you can cover with a tablecloth, but there is an easy, low-cost option that you can complete in a day, that will last for years, and be functional, smooth and attractive.

Things You'll Need

  • Sponge
  • Distilled white vinegar
  • Paintbrush
  • Wrapping paper
  • Ruler
  • Utility knife
  • White glue
  • Measuring tape
  • Clear finish decoupage medium

Instructions

  1. The Decoupage Do-Over

    • 1

Shut down, unplug and remove your computer and peripherals, as well as all of the other items on your computer desk.

    • 2

Clean the desk by wiping it with a 50/50 mixture of distilled white vinegar and water. Allow the desk to dry completely.

    • 3

Measure and cut the wrapping paper to cover your desk and trim. Try to make as few cuts as necessary and cut the desk top pieces long and wide enough to cover the front and side edging.

    • 4

Using a clean paintbrush, cover your desk with a thin layer of white glue, and allow it to dry (approximately 2 hours; you will know the glue is dry when it is completely clear).

    • 5

Apply a thin layer of decoupage medium to the desk's surface with another clean brush, then carefully press the wrapping paper onto the desk. While the medium is wet, you can smooth the paper with the edge of a ruler or a Popsicle stick.

    • 6

Let the medium dry for 15 to 20 minutes.

    • 7

Using a clean paintbrush, apply four coats of decoupage medium to the paper, letting each coat dry for approximately 15 minutes before going onto the next. When the decoupage medium goes from white to clear, it is dry.
