How to Cover a Weathered Computer Desk

If your computer desk has seen better days, you could put that old desk out with the trash and buy a new one. That option, however, can be costly both in cash and time. New computer furniture is expensive, and then there is the hassle involved with putting it together, putting it in place and adjusting it to suit your particular needs. It may be best to work with what you have by repairing or creatively covering up that worn out wooden surface.

Assess the condition of your computer desk to determine how far gone the wood surface really is. Thoroughly clean it with mild soap and water. Remove white stains by gentle rubbing with denatured alcohol. Restore a glossy hard finish by applying a coat of paste wax with very fine steel wool (0000). Polish the surface with soft cloths when dry. If the entire surface has deteriorated -- black or dark stain indicate this -- it may be best to strip the wood and apply new wood stain and water-based topcoat.

Move your computer and look at the condition of the wood where the computer had been sitting. Often the wood under the computer will be in pristine condition, while the surrounding area will have deteriorated from years of use.

Place a quality computer mat over the most unsightly part of your computer desk and use this as the new location for your computer. A computer mat will cut down on the risks posed by static electricity while protecting your desk at the same time.

Use colorful decals and other decorations to dress up your computer desk and cover up any worn or badly stained areas of the desk. These decals can also add a personal touch to your computer workstation.
