How to Build Your Own Glass Desk

Building your own glass desk opens a whole new world of design possibilities to you. A glass desk is possibly one of the easiest types of desks to make. No special woodworking tools, such as saws, planes, sanders or levels, are needed. Sculpted, tapered, adjustable or columned metal bases are readily available in a variety of finishes that are perfect for any office. You can design and build a glass desk for the cost of the glass desktop, side bases and a few other inexpensive items in just a few hours.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 desk side bases
  • Phillips-head screwdriver
  • 1/2-inch-thick piece of 30-inch-by-50-inch tempered glass, polished on all edges
  • Glass cleaner
  • 6 to 8 clear polyurethane self-adhesive bumpers

Instructions

    • 1

Assemble the side bases by following the manufacturer's assembly instructions. Desk bases will be between 27 inches and 28 inches in height to accommodate a desk chair comfortably and typically only require minor assembly and adjustment with a Phillips-head screwdriver.

    • 2

Clean and dry the top and bottom of the desktop by spraying it with glass cleaner and wiping it off with paper towels.

    • 3

Attach the self-adhesive bumpers to the top level service of the bases, approximately 2 inches apart, by pressing the adhesive side to the bases.

    • 4

Position the desktop onto the bases. The weight of the glass will hold it securely onto the assembled base.
