Measure your keyboard if it isn't standard length and width; most are 18 inches long and 6 inches wide. Plan to add extra length to your shelf if you want to fit your mouse on the side. Set out your keyboard and mouse on top of the 3/4-inch lumber core plywood to get a good feel for the ideal length and width for your tray. It's also important to make sure this length fits inside the armoire shelf you plan to use.
Cut your keyboard tray to this length and width. Sand it, then paint or stain it to match the rest of the armoire.
Cut four pieces of plywood to 1 inch by 3 inches and another two pieces of plywood to 1 inch by 2 inches. Fasten a shorter plywood piece to two longer pieces in the shape of an "U" with two wood screws; repeat this process with the remaining two pieces.
Drill three evenly spaced pilot holes down one of the long limbs of each of your constructed U-brackets.
Fasten the drawer slides to the sides of the keyboard tray, then to the U-brackets, using the pilot holes you just drilled. Attach one bracket to either side.
Remove a shelf from the armoire, either by pulling it out or unscrewing it from its brackets. Turn it upside down. Screw the unattached tops of your U-brackets to the underside of the drawer in the center of the shelf or wherever you decide is the most comfortable placement of the tray.
Turn the shelf back over and test your tray. Reattach the shelf to the armoire to complete the process.
