How to Build a Computer Desk From Scrap Lumber

Personal computers can be used in many rooms of a house and typically require a piece of furniture, such as a computer desk, for ease of use. A computer desk can be purchased online or at a store, but you can save money by building one yourself out of scrap lumber left over from other projects. Doing it yourself also allows you to customize your desk for your personal needs.

Things You'll Need

  • Scrap lumber sheets

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the dimensions or size that you require for the computer desk. A typical computer desk can measure 36 inches wide, 20 inches deep and 30 inches high. You can adjust these dimensions to your own needs, particularly the width if you have the room and want more desk space.

    • 2

Measure a scrap piece of plywood with the tape measure for your desk top. Mark your dimensions--36 inches wide by 20 inches deep--on the plywood with the pencil.

    • 3

Measure and mark another piece of plywood 20 inches by 30 inches for one side panel. Repeat this step for a second side panel.

    • 4

Cut each piece of plywood on the pencil marks with the circular saw. You will end up with one piece for the top and two pieces for the side panels.

    • 5

Attach two L-brackets to the top of one side panel with screws using the power drill. Each L-bracket should be 3 inches from the front and back edges. Repeat this step for the other side panel.

    • 6

Lay the top panel on the floor and set one of the side panels on an edge. Align the edge of the panel so that it is flush with the edge of the top. Insert screws into the L-brackets and tighten then with the power drill. Set the other side panel in place on the other edge and secure it with screws using the power drill.

    • 7

Measure the distance between the side panels with the tape measure. Make a note of the measurement on a piece of paper. Transfer the measurement to a 1-by-3 board and cut it to length with the circular saw.

    • 8

Determine which side will be the front. Measure down each side panel six inches with the tape measure and make a mark with the pencil. This will be the location for the front support.

    • 9

Align the 1-inch-by-3-inch board with the marks you made on the side panels. Pre-drill holes into the wood with the power drill.

    • 10

Insert screws into the holes and tighten with the power drill to secure the 1-inch-by-3-inch board.

    • 11

Set the computer desk upright and then sand the edges of the plywood with sandpaper to compete the project.
