How to Open a Desk Lock

Locking a desk drawer is a good idea if your are storing important documents or other items. However, the keys for desk drawer locks tend to be small and they are easily misplaced. If the desk is not open very often you may simply have forgotten where you put the key. Although this is a frustrating experience, especially if you are in a hurry, it is usually possible to pick the lock with the proper tools and the right amount of patience and finesse.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a spring steel pick and lock picking tension tool. The spring steel pick is shaped like a "W" and the tension tool is "L" shaped. A flashlight is helpful as well.

    • 2

Shine the flashlight into the lock and locate the side of the lock with the pins or teeth. If the pins are not visible then use the spring steel pick to figure out where the pins are. Insert the spring steel pick into the lock opening and jingle it around. You should be able to feel and hear when the pick makes contact with the lock pins.

    • 3

Insert the tension tool into the lock on the side without the teeth or pins. Twist the tension tool while applying pressure. This will move the locking mechanism.

    • 4

Insert the spring steel pick into the lock on the side with the teeth or pins. Continue applying pressure with the tension tool and jostle the pick to lift the pins.

    • 5

Continue applying pressure and turning the lock with the tension tool. The lock will be in the unlock position once all the pins are lifted.
