What to Do With an Old Upright Piano?

Old upright pianos can have a variety of uses, regardless of their condition. Many were created not only as musical instruments but also as beautiful furniture, so they can be "recycled" in different ways depending on what shape they are in.
  1. If It Can Still Make Music

    • If the soundboard is in good shape then the piano's musical life may not be over, even though it needs work. For many churches, schools and other non-profits, any piano is better than none at all and you may qualify for a tax deduction if you make it a charitable donation.

    If The Music Has Died

    • If the inner works are beyond repair but the outside is in good shape, a piano can be re-purposed to make an attractive and functional desk or sideboard. Tackle it as a DIY project or consider hiring a cabinetmaker who specializes in that type of conversion.

If The Exterior Is Damaged, Too

    • If the cabinet is too far gone to preserve as a whole, consider dismantling it and using undamaged parts, legs, front panel, top, in other projects.
