How to Build a Simple Corner Computer Desk

Most standard desks have become decidedly outdated and inconvenient. Many barely have enough room for anything other than the home computer. Corner desks solve this problem by providing twice the surface space while taking advantage of room space that is otherwise not utilized. Make your own basic corner computer desk to fulfill both your computer and non-computer needs with space to spare.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a single rectangle of plywood measuring 5 feet by 3 feet. Use the sawhorses and hand power saw to cut this piece in half width-wise using an angled line; this line will stretch from two feet from the end on the left side up to three feet in from the same end on the right side, creating a 45 degree angle cut. When you flip one of these pieces upside-down and press the angled edges of the pieces together, they will form a 90 degree angle to fit into the corner of a room.

    • 2

Cut six rectangles measuring 3 1/2 feet by 1 1/2 foot for the legs of the desk.

    • 3

Make the short wood strips for the desk's lip.

    • 4

Assemble the desktop pieces atop the sawhorses using wood glue and wood biscuits. Cut six to eight slots in each edge of the angled sides of the desktop pieces, spacing them out evenly and identically so that they will line up when placed together. Apply glue generously to the edges and into the slots. Insert biscuits into the slots on one side before lining the edges up with the other side, sliding the biscuits into place like tabs into slots. Press the edges firmly together and let the glue dry.

    • 5

Line up the lip pieces to the edge of the desk piece, lining up the four strips with the desk edges of the same length and positioning the lips so that they hang down off the edges of the desk. Attach with inch long screws, driving the screws in from the outside of the lip. Use one screw for every six inches.

    • 6

Lay the desktop upside-down on the floor to attach the legs.

    • 7

Attach the legs with wood glue. Position them on the underside of the desk, inside the lip. Place one leg on each side of the desk's corner, close to the point. Place two legs on each end of the desk, positioning them on the ends of the long sides on both the outside and inside of the legs of the "L" shape.

    • 8

Turn the desk right side up to reinforce the glued legs with screws. Drive the screws down through the desktop into the legs. Use at least three screws for each leg.

    • 9

Sand the desk with the disc sander.

    • 10

Apply varnish, if desired, according to manufacturer's instructions.
