DIY Wood Desk

Although you can build all sorts of attachments, cubbies, drawers and addenda to a desk, all you really need is a flat workspace set high enough to conveniently use. Plans for a simple, tabletop desk are the best place to start. From this basic design, you can add additional components as your mood and needs require. Set aside an afternoon for this project. It might take substantially less time, but you want to make sure you have time to do it right.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut your lumber to the specified dimensions. If you're inexperienced cutting long, straight lines, consider having the lumber yard make the cuts before you load out.

    • 2

Sand all faces of your lumber with rough-grit sandpaper. Wipe clean.

    • 3

Set one 30-by-30-inch sheet in an L-shape with one 30-by-48 sheet, with the edge of the smaller sheet abutting the inside face of the longer. Glue in place with a line of wood glue.

    • 4

Reinforce the joint with a line of 8 evenly spaced nails. It is much easier to do this with a nail gun than with a hammer. Wipe away excess glue and allow to dry.

    • 5

Attach the other 30-by-30 sheet to the free end of the L-shape, forming a U. Glue, nail and wipe as in Step 4. This forms the base of your desk.

    • 6

Set the remaining 30-by-48 sheet on top of the frame, forming the work surface of your desk. Glue in place along the tops of the frame.

    • 7

Reinforce the seam with a line of evenly spaced nails. Use 8 nails per 30-inch end piece and 12 nails for the 48-inch back plate.

    • 8

Dab a small amount of painter's putty over the heads of any visible nails. Allow to dry.

    • 9

Sand all visible surfaces using fine-grit sandpaper.

    • 10

Apply two coats of wood stain to all exposed surfaces. Allow to dry, then apply a second coat.
