Look around your house for an old door made of solid wood. Many older houses have exterior doors made of maple, mahogany or oak. These doors are solid pieces of wood and look amazingly artful under tempered glass. Purchasing a door for this project is costly since a solid mahogany exterior door 30 by 80 inches costs on average $699. If you can't find a door in your basement, ask your neighbors and friends if they have one. Remove the door handle and the hinges.

Search for a couple of two-drawer filing cabinets. The cabinets are the base of the homemade desk. The solid wood door will sit on top of the two file cabinets with the tempered glass lying flat on the door. Purchasing 2 filing cabinets is cheaper than buying a new desk. If you can't find 2 filing cabinets, go to your local variety store and pick up a couple. Use a wood finish since it will match the wood door better than metal.

Purchase a piece of tempered glass at your local hardware store. The measurement for the average wood door is 30 x 80 inches. Purchase a piece of tempered glass of equal measurement. It is important to have the edges and the corners rounded and smoothed. Glass breaks and chips easily. Rounding the edges and corners of tempered glass preserves its use.

Set the filing cabinets 3 to 4 feet apart where you want the desk. Once the filing cabinets are in place, lay the wood door on top of them; the door is the desktop and the tempered glass goes on top. You now have a functional homemade tempered glass desk.
