How to Change Unit Drawers

It's not often that you get called upon to change out the drawers in a desk, dresser or storage unit. However, if you do, the process is usually fairly even. Different manufacturers build different models of drawer unit according to different specifications, and each has its own idiosyncracies. Despite this, replacing a drawer in a unit requires the same basic steps for most types.

Instructions

    • 1

Confirm that your new drawer will be compatible with your existing unit. It must be of the same height and width, and have no greater depth, than the drawer you're replacing. It will also need to use the same mechanism for hanging in place and sliding.

    • 2

Pull the existing drawer out as far as it can go.

    • 3

Remove the existing drawer. For many models, this means pulling it upward at an angle while fully extended. Others may require you to flip a tab located near the sliding mechanism. A few models actually require you to dismantle that section of the unit in order to get the drawer out.

    • 4

Examine the sliding and hanging mechanism of the desk. Although you may understand it well, a quick scan can be a significant help when you slide in the new drawer.

    • 5

Slide the new drawer in place by reversing the process by which you removed the old.
