How to Build a Craft Counter

For all of those crafters out there, you can imagine how nice it would be to have a designated work surface for your projects. Unfortunately, desks and storage that are specifically labeled for crafting purposes can be costly. By purchasing a few supplies and putting the work surface together yourself, you can save money and, with a couple of modifications, save some space too.

Things You'll Need

  • Two cube storage units
  • One sheet of 1" thick MDF
  • White paint and primer (or color of your choice)
  • Paint roller
  • Screws
  • Drill
  • Hinges (optional)

Instructions

Attach the 1x4 boards to the MDF on all sides except for the back side that will be against the wall. Ensure that the 1x4 boards are wide enough to fit the cube storage units under. The easiest way to attach the boards to the MDF is with screws and a drill. Most screws require a Phillips head drill bit. You can use a screwdriver but the job will take a great deal longer.

Attach the MDF top to the wall using the hinges. Again, you can do this with screws and either a drill or a screwdriver. If you use a drill, be sure to go slowly so as not to crack the MDF. Try also to attach the hinges to the wall where there are studs. This will create more support for the desk.

Place the cube storage shelves under the MDF on either end. These will not only act as the legs for the MDF top, they will work as storage for your crafts as well.

Prime and paint the desk. One coat of solvent-based primer should do the trick and you should allow it to dry for 24 hours before applying the paint. Use latex paint and apply the number of coats necessary to achieve the desired look. Using a roller will achieve the most even look.
