Kinds of Desks

Executive Desk

• An executive desk is one of the more common types of desks; it is extremely versatile because it has a wide, flat surface where you can place a computer or which you can use as a writing or crafts desk. Some executive desks feature drawers that are equipped with locks, so you can securely store items and documents. Most executive desks are made from wood, such as cherry or mahogany; but you may also find executive desks that are made from wood laminate, plastic laminate or metal.

L-Shaped Desk

• An L-shaped desk helps maximize the available space in a room while providing as large a workspace as possible. As the name implies, the desk features two work surfaces that form a 90 degree angle, or an L-shape. This type of desk is designed to fit in the corner of a room but may also be placed in the center of a large space. If you have a desktop computer, placing it at the corner of an L-shaped desk provides the most ergonomically favorable set up. The desk's design provides plenty of space for additional supplies on either side of the computer so you do not have to move around too much to reach items.

Secretary Desk

• For a retro look, a secretary desk is an attractive option. The design features a base with drawers and a hinged top that folds down to provide a flat work surface. The cabinet behind the fold-down surface usually contains a bookshelf or cubbyholes, as well. A secretary desk is usually an ineffective option for a desktop computer, but a laptop can typically fit on the work surface. If you have a small space, a secretary desk can be an effective solution because you can fold the desk surface up when necessary to provide additional room.

Roll-Top Desk

• A roll-top desk is another retro-style desk; it features a pedestal design with drawers and a flat work surface on top. However, it has a flexible cover that rolls down in a quarter-circle shape to hide the desk's surface. In some cases, there are cubbyholes above the work surface where you may store office supplies. A roll-top desk allows you to conceal any clutter or mess that may accumulate on the surface so your room can have a neat, tidy appearance no matter how busy you may be.
