How to Find the Right Desk for My Office

The desk is the centerpiece of a home office, so choosing the right desk is critical. You need a desk that fits your style of work. For example, do you do most of your work at the computer, or do you do a lot of talking on the phone and taking notes? Then, in addition to finding a desk that suits your work style, you also need to find a desk that blends in with the decor of your office.

Instructions

Decide on the height of your desk. Although most desks are designed to be used when seated, you also can consider a standing desk. Proponents say a standing desk -- at which you either stand or sit on a high stool -- can improve alertness and ease back pain.

Consider the purpose of the desk. Some of the options include a computer desk, writing desk or drafting desk. If you do multiple tasks at your desk, such as writing and working on a computer, consider an L-shaped or U-shaped desk so that you can switch tasks easily without having to rearrange your workspace.

Ensure that your desk will fit in the allotted space. Putting a large desk in a small space is likely to make you feel cramped. Placing a small desk in a large space may not give you all the workspace you need. If you have limited space and need as much desktop as possible, consider an L-shaped desk

Look at the surface of the desktop to ensure that it is appropriate for your needs. Metal or steel desktops are the most durable, but they might not be appropriate if you bring clients into your office. Laminate tops are more durable than wood desktops, but cheap laminate is likely to peel. Natural wood or wood veneer are the least durable options, but they are the most attractive and elegant.

Check the available amenities. If you need quick access to files or reference materials, you can choose a desk with drawers. If you type on a keyboard, look for a rollout keyboard tray. If you have long legs, you want a lot of room under the desk. If you use a lot of electronics, find a desk with precut holes for cords.

Think about how the desk will look in your office. For example, if all of your office furniture is metal and glass, a wood desk will seem out of place. Also consider the color of the desk, and choose something that coordinates with the color of the walls, flooring, art and other furniture in your office.
