Closet Desk Ideas

If you work out of your house even part time, a dedicated office space in your home can help keep you organized and productive. In a smaller house or apartment, however, you may not have a room available to devote to a home office, which is where a spare closet can come in handy; you can add a desk, comfortable chair and your laptop and you have an instant workspace. While this may seem like a great use of limited space, finding a desk to fit your closet can be a real challenge. With a little persistence and careful measurements, it can be done.
  1. Use a Premade Desk

    • Depending on the available space, using an inexpensive premade desk from a home furnishings store in your closet office may be easiest. While there are many styles of desks that are cumbersome and probably would not fit in a standard-size closet, look for a streamlined writing style desk that does not feature drawers beneath the top surface, which tend to be smaller and thinner so they may fit inside your closet. However, if you have a larger closet that features double doors, you may not fit a variety of desks inside the space. Measure your closet carefully before heading to the store so you can determine which desks will fit and which will not.

    Build Your Own

    • Another simple way to add a desk to your closet is to build your own. Purchase a couple of metal filing cabinets that fit the closet's dimensions. Add a wheeled stand to each cabinet so you can easily move your desk around if necessary. Place a premade desktop, available at many home furnishings stores, on top of the cabinets to create a simple desk with plenty of storage. To personalize it, spray paint the filing cabinets and desktop in colors of your choosing to create a coordinated look for your office closet.

    Use a Shelf

    • Instead of using a premade desk or desktop, use a wide shelf to serve as a desk for your closet. Using a shelf allows you to mount the desktop surface to the wall so you do not have to worry about accommodating heavy legs or large filing cabinets. You can also store a wider range of items beneath your desk if there is no base to get in the way. When selecting a shelf for your closet, make certain that it is deep enough to serve as your desktop but shallow enough to fit inside your closet. Visit your local home improvement or home furnishings store to peruse the various options; take the closet's measurements with you for sizing.

    Recycle Materials

    • If you are on a tight budget or just like the idea of reusing items, look around your garage, attic or basement for items that might be suitable for use as a desk in your closet. You can place scrap wood that you may have lying around on top of filing cabinets or mount the boards to the wall for a simple desk. If you have an old hollow core door, you can mount it to the wall to serve as a desktop as well. This type of door is ideal because it can easily be cut to size if it is too large for the available closet space.
