Instructions

    • 1

Measure the top of the desk, both horizontally and vertically. Subtract 1 inch from each measurement. These new figures are the size you will cut the fabric.

    • 2

Measure the fabric carefully and cut it the dimensions you calculated after measuring the desk top. Cut the fabric on the straight of grain, which is along the threads and perpendicular to them, instead of diagonally.

    • 3

Paint the back of the fabric with a thin coat of decoupage medium. Lift the fabric carefully and place it on the desk top. Move the fabric around to get it centered on the desk. Work out any folds or creases in the fabric gently, without stretching the cloth. Allow the decoupage medium to dry completely, about 30 to 45 minutes.

    • 4

Paint a coat of decoupage medium over the entire desk top, both fabric and edge surface. Allow this coat to dry, which should take about 30 minutes. Sand the desktop lightly to remove any bumps and wipe it clean with a paper towel. Add another coat and allow it to dry.

    • 5

Continue adding layers of decoupage medium, sanding in between each application, until you have six coats on the top of the desk. Allow the desk to sit overnight before you use it.
