How to Install Bottom Mount Sliding Drawers

Bottom-mount sliding drawers are typically found in higher-quality furniture due to the additional construction required for the drawers. The inside of the drawer compartment contains a horizontal slide from the front of the furniture to the back. The grooves in the slide under the drawer fit the channels of the slide inside the furniture for smooth movement in and out. Bottom-mount slides also provide support, so you can store heavier items in the drawers without fear of breaking the bottom or loosening the slide. Replace worn-out or broken slides yourself to save money.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the depth of the drawer from the back corner to the back edge of the face plate. This is the required length of the bottom-mount slides needed for the drawers. Slides are available at hardware and home improvement stores.

    • 2

Unscrew the old slides from the furniture and remove.

    • 3

Attach the male slides to the inside compartment of the furniture where the drawer will be installed, using the screws supplied with the slides and a screwdriver. The male slides are wider than the female slides that attach to the drawer. Each slide may be labeled L or R to denote installation on the left or right side. Use the existing screw holes in the furniture as a guide to installation.

    • 4

Attach the female slides to the bottom of the drawer using the supplied screws. Hold the slide to the edge of the drawer, insert the screws through the slide holes one at a time and twist them securely with a screwdriver. The wheel on the end of the slide must point toward the back of the drawer. Match the L and R slides to the correct sides of the drawer.

    • 5

Tip the drawer so the back end is lower than the front and insert the wheels on the bottom drawer slides into the channels on the slides inside the furniture. Lower the front of the drawer horizontally and slide it back into the furniture.
