Repairing a Peeling Leather Couch

A brand new leather couch can add elegance and warmth to any room, but over time, that leather may crack, fade and peel. That peeling and cracking is often caused by exposure to sunlight, but even sofas that are not exposed to warm temperatures or direct sun can experience this problem. Fortunately, you can take steps to bring your couch back to new, using some simple and relatively inexpensive items.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Make a cleaning mixture by pouring mild dish soap into a bowl of warm water. Stir until suds begin to form.

    • 2

Dip a clean scrub brush in the detergent and water mixture and then use it to clean the problem area thoroughly. Dry the area thoroughly using a soft cloth or towel.

    • 3

Scrub the problem area thoroughly with a nylon scrubber pad dipped in the detergent mixture. Scrub with small circular motions to make the leather grain stand up and give it a rougher texture. Wipe the couch dry with a towel or soft cloth.

    • 4

Dip a cloth or rag in denatured alcohol and wipe down the peeling area completely. Allow the alcohol to air dry.

    • 5

Dip a fine grain sandpaper in the detergent and water mixture. Rub the sandpaper over the part of the leather that is peeling. This will roughen the surface further and make it easier for the leather dye to adhere to the surface.

    • 6

Wipe away any sandpaper debris with a towel or soft cloth. Allow the couch to dry naturally.

    • 7

Spray a quality leather conditioner on the surface you are working with. This will prepare the leather and make it easier for the dye to do its job. Rub the conditioner into the leather and then wipe away any excess.

    • 8

Use a quality leather dye to cover up the peeling area. Apply a light coat of leather dye, allow it to dry and then apply more dye as needed. Continue applying dye until the peeling spots are covered up and the couch once again has a uniform and attractive look.
