How to Raise an Antique Sofa's Height With New Legs

The lower height of some antique sofas makes them out of balance with the other chairs and furnishings in the room. With antique sofas, you can experience problems in matching the height of end tables and a coffee table. Raising the sofa with new legs is a simple way of giving your couch a few extra inches of height and makes it better fit into a modern room.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the sofa upside down so that the feet face up. Depending on the type of leg used, the sofa should either feature a T-plate, which the leg screws into, or a leg that screws directly into the wood frame of the couch. Remove the legs from the sofa and set them aside.

    • 2

Measure the length of the existing sofa leg and write the measurement down. Do not include any of the attachment parts that go up into the furniture as part of the leg's length. Buy new legs that are slightly taller than the existing legs on the sofa.

    • 3

Unscrew the T-plates from the bottom of the couch, if the sofa has them. Replace the plates with new plates. Set the plate on the indent left behind by the old plate and screw the four screws into place, one on each corner of the plate.

    • 4

Place one of the legs on one corner of the couch and press down as you slowly screw the leg into the plate. Repeat the process on each corner of the couch, until you have the four legs firmly inserted into the antique sofa.

    • 5

Wiggle the legs gently with your hands, making sure that the top of the leg sits flush with the couch. If the leg moves, then apply more pressure to the bottom as you tightly screw the leg into the couch. Turn the couch over and look for any signs of rocking, which indicate uneven legs.
