Switch out the mattress. An old sofa bed probably has an old mattress, and the easiest way to make the bed more comfortable is to start fresh with a new mattress that will provide support and comfort to the sleeper. A replacement sofa bed mattress can be purchased online from retailers such as Sofatopia.com, Amazon.com and Overstock.com. Check with your manufacturer for a replacement sofa bed mattress, as well. A regular mattress will not work; it must be specifically made for a fold out sofa bed.
Add another layer of support. If the sofa mattress is too thin or still doesn't seem supportive, a special mattress pad can be added. They are made especially to add comfort to sofa bed mattresses. Check a retailer such as Sears to purchase a specific pad that can be added to the sofa bed mattress.
Spread a cozy blanket or bedspread out on top of the mattress before you crawl in. A padded bedspread, sleeping bag or fuzzy, soft blanket can help make the bed more inviting and fluffy.
Toss some thick, supportive pillows on to the bed. Purchase new ones if your old ones are flat or showing signs of wear. Down pillows are very comfortable, or firm bed pillows may work for extra neck and head support.
Buy new sheets. Jersey cotton sheets are made out of a lightweight T-shirt material and are very comfortable to sleep on. For cooler nights, fluffy flannel sheets are a welcome treat at night. A new set of sheets can make an old bed seem brand new.
