How to Keep Leather Sofas Sturdy

Leather is a favorite option for upholstering sofas, but it does have some drawbacks. Because it is made from a natural animal hide that contains pores, it can deteriorate over time if not properly cared for with pH balanced products. To keep a leather sofa looking sturdy and like new for years, it is important to treat the leather with cleaning products and ensure that the surface of the sofa receives friction-induced wear evenly across all seating areas.

Instructions

    • 1

Regularly rotate the cushions on the sofa to ensure even wear. Flip the cushions over and swap them with the cushions from another section of the sofa. If the cushions do not move, then attempt to sit in a different part of the couch each day to wear evenly.

Clean and condition the leather every three to six months. Using pH balanced leather care products removes surface oils that degrade the material and replenishes moisture in the leather, preventing cracking and tears that could release stuffing. Leather cleaning spray should be applied, buffed with a dry cloth, and followed with an application of leather conditioning cream.

Do not exceed the weight limit of the sofa. Consult with your furniture salesman or the sofa manufacturer to determine what the recommended weight or person limit is for your particular model.

    • 4

Inspect the sofa every year for signs of sagging, stress or damage. Repair any worn or damaged areas in a timely manner to prevent the problem from affecting any other areas of the couch. Legs, stuffing or springs are common areas that can deteriorate over time.

Fill any cracks or holes in the upholstery with leather heavy filler to prevent them from getting worse. The gray colored heavy filler can be concealed with a leather recoloring balm.
