How to Dye Upholstery on a Sofa

You don't have to replace an old, unappealing couch if it is still in good condition. Instead, you can give it a makeover by changing its color. You can use a spray-on dye that adheres to upholstery. The dye is actually a paint because dyes will not adhere to most synthetic upholstery or fiber blends. However, the paint is designed specifically for upholstery and dries so it is soft to the touch and lasts for years. For the best results, choose a paint color that is mottled or has color flecks in it so if you apply the paint unevenly, it blends in.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the couch thoroughly with a vacuum to remove any dust and hair on it. If the couch is quite dirty, you can clean it with the upholstery attachments on a carpet cleaner. Rinse the couch after cleaning to remove any residue, and wait for it to dry before proceeding.

Set the couch on a tarp, drop cloth or cardboard to protect your work area. Open the windows or work outside if the weather is nice.

    • 3

Take the cushions off the couch, shake the paint can, and spray the paint on the upholstery using a slow, even motion. Then paint the cushions, and set them aside to dry.

Leave the couch for 72 hours for the paint to set before using.
