How to Fumigate a Couch

To keep expenses minimal, you can attempt to do the job yourself using the natural chemical compound carbon dioxide.

Instructions

  Cover the outer surface of a large dog bowl with fabric. Use a bowl that has edges to keep it from tipping over. Attach the fabric to the bowl with tape. The fabric covers the slippery outer surface of the bowl and makes for a surface that is easy to climb.

  Turn the bowl over and cover the inner grooves and edges with talcum powder. The powder makes for a slippery surface so the bugs can't escape.

  Wear thick gardening gloves and fill an insulated container with dry ice. Dry ice releases carbon dioxide fumes; this attracts bloodsucking insects, such as bed bugs.

  Place the couch in a dark room, or in a shed outdoors.

  Place the pet food bowl upside-down on the couch. Position the insulated container on top of the food bowl. Slightly open the container so the carbon dioxide is released. The bugs are drawn to the carbon dioxide and crawl up the pet food bowl. Once they fall into the groove of the pet food bowl, the talcum powder makes it impossible for them to climb out, and they die.

  Wait 24 hours before checking your progress. Discard the dead bugs and replace the dry ice when it dissolves. Repeat the process for three days to make sure all bugs are killed.
