How to Get a Couch Through a Doorway

Before bringing a couch into your home, dorm or apartment, you need to make sure it will fit through the doorway without scratching the walls, marring the woodwork or damaging the legs or upholstery of the couch. While an overstuffed couch has a certain amount of "squish," it may not be enough. You may have to reorient the couch, make it narrower or make the doorway wider if you don't want it to get stuck.

Things You'll Need

  • Measuring tape
  • Hammer
  • Center punch
  • Flat-head and Phillips screwdrivers
  • Rope, 25 to 50 feet
  • 6 to 8 bungee cords, various lengths
  • Socket set with ratchet wrench

Instructions

  1. Storm Door

    • 1

Measure the height and width of the door. Measure the front, back and base of the couch to see how much additional room you need.

    • 2

Open the storm door and slide the stop all the way along the rod, until it rests against the barrel of the storm door closer.

    • 3

Remove the pins at the ends of the closer barrel, using a center punch, hammer and pliers. Find a center punch or a piece of steel rod a little narrower in diameter than the pin.

    • 4

Place the tip of the center punch or steel rod against one end of the pin. Tap it with a hammer until you can pull it from the door closer using a pliers.

    • 5

Remove the screws that attach the closer to the door if there are no pins or if there is only one pin.

    • 6

Push the door all the way open. Prop the door to keep it from closing.

    • 7

Remove the couch cushions. Twist all legs counterclockwise to remove them from the couch.

    • 8

Secure the hinged lid or sleeper apparatus, if any, so it cannot fall open while you move the couch. Use rope or bungee cords.

    • 9

Turn the couch on end if it's shorter than the height of the door. Position the couch with the back pointing into the house and the seat facing the doorway. Leave the front edge of the seat facing left if there's turning room to the left side as you enter the house.

    • 10

Position the couch with the back pointing into the house and the seat facing the doorway. Leave the front edge of the seat facing right if there's turning room to the right side as you enter the house.

    • 11

Swing the couch to the left or right as you slide it through the doorway on its end, depending where there is room to maneuver it.

    • 12

Turn the couch right side up and move it to its final position. Replace the feet by sticking the hanger bolt back into its hole in the couch and turning the couch leg clockwise until it rests flush against the couch frame. Place the cushions back on the couch.

    Standard Interior Doors

    • 13

Open the door partway to expose the hinges. Start with the top hinge. Place a center punch slightly narrower in diameter than the hinge barrel against the floor end of the hinge pin.

    • 14

Tap the center punch until the head of the hinge pin raises above the hinge barrel. Keep tapping until you can pull the hinge pin out of the barrel.

    • 15

Repeat for the bottom hinge. Have a helper hold the door in place while you remove the center hinge pin.

    • 16

Remove the door and set the hinge parts aside.

    • 17

Remove the feet from the couch by turning them counterclockwise. Turn the couch on end and slide it through the doorway as before.

    • 18

Replace the feet by sticking the hanger bolts in the holes and turning the feet clockwise. Move the couch to its final position in the room. Replace the cushions.
