How to Make Couch Covers From Bedspreads

Measure the width of the couch body, one arm to the other, to calculate the size of bedspread needed for the cover. Increase the measurement 12 inches so there is enough bedspread for the seams and excess area by the couch arms.

Measure the arm length of the couch from the cushion and over the arm to the floor and increase the value by 2 inches. Measure the arm or side width of the couch from the front to the back and increase the value by 2 inches. Use these measurements to cut a twin-sized bedspread into the correctly sized pieces for the arm coverings.

Lay the appropriate-sized bedspread over the body of the couch, with the long direction of the bedspread draping from the front to the back of the couch. Tuck excess bedspread into the back crease of the cushions to make the cover the correct size. Cut the second bedspread into the arm pieces and lay them over the arm in the correct placement.

Pin the arm bedspread piece to the body bedspread in the correct location so the right sides are together. The right side is the side you want facing outward. Sew the arm pieces to the body piece with a 1/2- to 3/4-inch seam.

Lay the bedspread with arms onto the couch with the wrong side facing out and tuck in excess fabric along the back crease. Pin the back edges together from the top corner of the backrest to the rear bottom corner on each side of the couch. Pin the front edges together from the top of the armrest to the front bottom corner on each side of the couch.

Take the cover off the couch and sew all four seams with a 1/2- to 3/4-inch seam.

Hem the bottom edge of the couch, if there is a raw edge from cutting arm pieces. Turn 1/2 inch to the wrong side, and then another 1/2 inch to create a clean folded hem. Sew the fold to hold in place.
